On Monday, December 12, 2011, I received the sad news that my childhood friend, Susan Gordon had passed away after a long battle with cancer. We appeared together many times and she was a gorgeous addition to all my birthday parties. We both eventually left LA and decades passed before we found one another again.
We were reunited when my wife Laurie found her to interview her for my autobiography. Susan made some insightful contributions to it for which I am very grateful. I told her all about the autograph shows then, and Laurie sent her to a few of them reuniting her with pals Flip Mark, Paul Petersen, Jeannie Russell, and her "My Three Sons" boyfriend, Stan Livingston. She loved being back "in the fold." We discovered that she'd traveled the world, lived in Japan for years, married and had six children. She was in constant motion and as sweet as she was busy! Both Laurie and I have posted tributes to her on our Facebook pages, letting our friends know a lovely light has gone out in the world. We are both gratified to see the many comments there and the scenes from her films people have posted. She is being lovingly remembered and I hope she's feeling all the love as she travels on another journey.
Susan had not wanted anyone to know she was dying because she did not want to say goodbye. I'm told she never did. In her last conscious moments weeks ago, she said only that she needed to sleep. So I will not say goodbye either. Susan, you worked hard in your short time with us and you've left behind quite a legacy. Sleep, my friend, sleep.
